Why a Violin Isn't a Flute

Harmonics, timbre, and taking a signal apart

Every wave is a sum of simple waves

In 1822 Joseph Fourier showed that any repeating waveform, however complicated, can be built by adding together pure sine waves at whole-number multiples of one base frequency. The lowest is the fundamental, and it sets the pitch you hear. The rest are harmonics, and they set everything else.

A violin and a flute playing the same A both repeat 440 times a second, so both are heard as the same note. The flute is nearly a pure sine — few harmonics. The violin's bowed string is rich in them. That difference is timbre, and it is the entire reason you can tell a voice from a trumpet.

The recipe is a fingerprint

Because the mix of harmonics is characteristic, a spectrum is an identification. It is how astronomers know what a star is made of, how a chemist reads an infrared spectrum, how speech recognition finds vowels, how an engineer hears a failing bearing in a machine before it breaks — a new peak has appeared where there was none.

The mathematics that extracts the recipe is the Fourier transform. The fast algorithm for it, the fft, published by Cooley and Tukey in 1965 and known to Gauss in 1805, is arguably the most-used numerical method ever written. Your phone runs it thousands of times a second.

Which is where you hide things

If a signal's expected spectrum is known, anything added to it shows up as something that should not be there. Steganography in audio, spread-spectrum transmission beneath the noise floor, and the detection of both, are all spectrum problems.

This is why the game has you rebuild the waveform harmonic by harmonic before it will let you look for the anomaly: you cannot see what does not belong until you know what does.
